Got Luck Tales of the Behindbeyond Book 1 eBook Michael Darling
I really was quite surprised by this book. I normally approach new series and new authors with a 10' pole. I'm glad I put the pole aside with this one. Got Luck is the name of the main character. As the book starts, he has some small talent that is generally worthless. As the book progresses and his talents increase, so to, do his adversaries. The book is also a triangulated love story. Maybe "bad"..isn't so bad...and maybe "good"..isn't so good. I read a lot. I could care a less about odd grammar that readers will encounter...especially when I learned it was deliberate and meant to display a speech inflection. The book is well edited. The pace is pretty good. The plot was a lot better than a lot of the drivel that I've encountered lately. I think this book is pretty vanilla and is thus suitable for all reading audiences. Give it a shot...you might be pleasantly surprised. I was. And to the author...next installment please. Soon, lest this fades from memory and you join the ranks of forgotten authors. You got a good thing going on.Tags : Amazon.com: Got Luck (Tales of the Behindbeyond Book 1) eBook: Michael Darling: Kindle Store, ebook,Michael Darling,Got Luck (Tales of the Behindbeyond Book 1),Future House Publishing,Fiction Mystery & Detective Hard-Boiled,Fiction Thrillers Supernatural
Got Luck Tales of the Behindbeyond Book 1 eBook Michael Darling Reviews
Private Investigator Goethe (Got) Luck has always been a little strange, what with his ability to see dark writhing ribbons of color that he calls Stain on certain people...colors that he thinks are associated with magic. Raised in a foster home by The Mama, ex-military, ex-police, his latest case may prove to be more than he can handle. Shortly after meeting with the client, a bullet smashes through his office window, narrowly missing him, and then he is attacked in his home by a giant invisible lion. Do these incidents have anything to do with the bizarre death of his client's husband, Barry Mallondyke? He soon finds himself in the midst of a fight for his life, working together with medical examiner Erin O'Connell and his long-time friend, Nat, Got discovers a connection with the mysterious Fae. A connection that quickly proves to be personal in a way he never imagined. I really enjoyed this book, with its tale of the Alder King, Fae and magic and the ever-snarky Got. If you are a fan of Harry Dresden, then this story should appeal to you. The author has created a wonderfully detailed world full of fey lines and locations, delving into legends, and setting up a character that is memorable. The ending leaves the reader wanting more...one can only hope that there will be new books set in this world.
"Got Hope" is so good, I not only borrowed it; I bought it, giving Michael Darling a little extra in the royalty department. So it is now part of my library even though I may never read it again.
Goethe "Got" Luck is one of the top paranormal private investigators in the business and Michael Darling has created a marvelous universe for him. Whether the action takes place in Florida or the Behindbeyond, it's well-written and moves right along.
This book can be enjoyed on its own but I would suggest reading the first story, "Got Luck." You'll appreciate the characters more.
As to why I may never re-read "Got Hope" again, an explanation would be a spoiler. Suffice it to say that another author I once eagerly followed introduced a similar twist and I never read another of his books. Fortunately, Mr. Darling was able to bring his story to a better conclusion so I will be waiting for the next chapter in the Goethe Luck series.
Got Luck by Michael Darling was both brilliant, and frustrating. I loved the idea behind this original story about a detective intertwined amongst the magical realms. I loved the vision that Michael had with his characters, and his skill in world building. I especially loved the new ideas he presented when it came to introducing fresh ideas, such as being able to see other people's individual "Stain," which sounded like another word for aura. (Why was it capitalized?)
Unfortunately this book falls short in the mechanics department. I'm actually having a hard time gathering my feelings in regard to the story because I was constantly getting yanked from what promised to be an amazing tale, due to choppy writing, odd word choices, and countless one-word sentences. It was work getting through the first page, and the lead character was far too pleased with himself.
Reading should NEVER feel like work. It should feel effortless, and pull you in. It should flow like a song, and in a way that makes you forget that you are reading words. It should transport you into another realm of existence as if you were experiencing it first hand. Yes, a good book really does do that that for me, and it does it every time.
This is another case where just one more edit could have made all the difference, and possibly removed about 50 to 75 pages of self indulgent humor, musings, and unnecessary words that rip you from the experience.
Got Luck is a brilliant original idea by Michael Darling, and if not for the constant distractions could have absolutely been a five star story. I have to give it 2 & 3/4 stars for the originality and world building alone. Writing a story is not easy. It takes time and care, so I appreciate the creativity that went into writing this.
