This is one funny writer! While the cover would lead one to believe this is targeted at the ladies, to my delight and pleasant surprise, her appeal is universal. She offers poignant insights on a variety of life's little adventures and misadventures. I particularly enjoyed her observations on competitive Disney World attendance and the incredible fashion surprise that awaits a parent (or grandparent in my case) whose child graduates from size 4 to 6X to the 7 to 14 bracket in the children's clothing department. (The latter is the source of the book's title.) My favorite humorists are Gene Shepard, Lewis Grizzard and Garrison Keillor. I am happy to report that Celia Rivenbark has joined my personal pantheon of writers who make me laugh out loud.Tags : Stop Dressing Your Six-Year-Old Like a Skank: And Other Words of Delicate Southern Wisdom [Celia Rivenbark] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. <div><div>Celia Rivenbark's essays about life in today's South are like caramel popcorn---sweet, salty,Celia Rivenbark,Stop Dressing Your Six-Year-Old Like a Skank: And Other Words of Delicate Southern Wisdom,St. Martin's Press,0312339933,1002793332,American wit and humor.,Southern States;Humor.,Wit and humor.,American wit and humor,Essays,Form - Essays,GENERAL,General Adult,Humor,Humor Form Essays,Non-Fiction,Southern States

Loved the chapter on little girl's clothing! I have nieces, and shopping for clothing gifts is a nightmare. Very honest, funny book.
I love her writing I'm not a southern belle myself but this book and the one previous had me laughing on the ground a must-read.
Celia is always funny. And wonderful to read..
This is the first book by Celia Rivenbark that I have read and I am now a fan! I was raised in the South by a Southern mother and every single story in this collection brings up memories. You will laugh out loud and may even walk away with a new expression or two. I'm waiting for "We're Just Like You, Only Prettier" to arrive so I can devour those stories as well. In the meantime, take off your ankle bracelet or people will think you're easy!!!
I have to admit that I did enjoy reading this book, however, I found it to be slightly annoying with all of Rivenbark's "southern" dialect. I grew up in VA, the northern boarder of NC (where Rivenbark lives) and I have never heard most of the sayings in this book. The last few chapters I had to force myself through. They almost did not make sense. The first 3/4 of this book were humorous little anticdotes from every-day life. The last section of the book was like it came out of nowhere. A random conversation with the OnStar people about Christmas shopping, a rant about Chipotle sauce, etc. I found the constant "ya'lls", "hons", and purposeful incorrect grammar to be quite annoying.
Nevertheless, I am highly considering giving Rivenbark another try. The majority of this book was funny (not Laurie Notaro funny of course), but it felt so forced at the end. Perhaps I will have better luck with another one of her works.
Smart and funny, this book is like a letter from an old friend. It speaks to working moms and any mom horrified by current fashion trends on a level we can all relate to.
What an entertaining collection of essays! I love this format and I am always on the lookout for new essayists to add to my shelves. These essays are quite straightforward - and read almost conversationally. I would imagine that an audio version would be equally engaging. This collection does not have the timelessness of a more literary collection - the celebrity references in particular date the book. Still, several of the rants contained within the book are hard to suppress audible laughter as you read. It's a charming, though not irresistible, collection.
